The Dance of Death, by Hans Holbein

XIII.

The Duke

Der Herzog.

Princeps induetur mœrore. Et quiescere faciam superbiã potentium. — Ezechie. vii.

THE DUKE.
The Duke turns pitilessly from a beggar-woman and her child. Meanwhile Death, fantastically crowned, lays hands on him.

Vien, prince, auec moy, & delaisse

Honneurs mondains tost finissantz.

Seule suis qui, certes, abaisse

L’orgueil & pompe des puissantz.
